There are so many people in trouble these days. Cancer has become an epidemic our-of-control touching almost everyone on the street. Marriages are breaking up, even in our Christian homes. Our young people are struggling with emotional problems that Grandma didn't know existed. People's lives are breaking up. The walls surrounding our homes and families are cracking and crumbling. In fact, our whole nation is in trouble.

Yet, there is an answer; there is a solution. These struggles in life are not hopeless. Oh God, help us tell people that there is an answer to these struggles in life. If we can't help you, we know someone who can. His name is Jesus Christ. He is our best friend.

Chaplains are Christian men and women with a heart to provide a blessing and a service to individuals and families in need.

Chaplains are committed to going into all the world, sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

"I heard the cry, Lord, here am I."

Have you ever lost your edge?
By: Darold Larson

Have you ever lost your edge? Well, I did about two years ago. I lost my edge and at first, I wasn't even aware I had lost it. There seemed to be something missing, but I didn't stop to do an inventory check of my life to see if everything was okay. Then it hit me; somewhere, I had lost my edge. This was bigger than I thought. Sometime ago, my pastor spoke on 2 King 6, 1-7 "One day the seminary students came to Elisha and told him, 'As you can see, our dormitory is too small. Tell us, as our president, whether we can build a new one down beside the Jordan River, where there are plenty of logs.'  'All right,' He told them, 'go ahead.' 'Please sir, come with us,' someone suggested. 'I will,' he said. When they arrived at the Jordan, they began cutting down trees, but as one of them was chopping, his ax head fell into the river. 'Oh sir,' he cried, 'It was borrowed!' 'Where did it fall?' the prophet asked. The youth showed him the place, and Elisha cut a stick and threw it into the water, and the ax head rose to the surface and floated!  'Grab it,' Elisha said to him; and he did."

As I was listening to that message, the Lord spoke to me gently and said, “Darold listen up. This is for you. You have been able to see the decay in the land. I have called you to preach the good news to the poor, bind up the broken hearted, proclaim freedom for the captives, and to comfort all who morn. I gave you a vision of chaplains that would come together in service to help encourage, rebuild, and restore the people who are down and discouraged. I blessed you and borrowed you the tools (the ax) to get the work done. While you were busy cutting down trees and trying to develop the vision, you became so busy that the head of your ax flew off, and you just kept whacking away with only your ax handle.  Darold, stop and rest a moment, for without me, you work in vein. You just keep beating your handle against the trees. You kept beating your ax handle till you became ill. Then you were forced to stop.”

The Lord began to physically restore me from a lung transplant, things would not be the same. When I got home from UCLA in California and started the road to recovery, it wasn't long until I tried to pick up my ax handle and start beating on my trees again. It just didn't work. About a year ago, I called a friend in the ministry and told him I was going to pack up my ministry tent and just watch the grand kids grow. Then in about six months, I began to realize that somewhere, I had lost my edge. I began talking to God about it. I knew everything that I had was loaned to me by God and I lost it. I said, “Lord, I have a heavy heart. Would you help me get back the edge (the ax head) loaned me?”

Yes, the Lord has shown me the place where I lost my edge (the ax head). The bible says in 2 Kings 6: 6: "and the ax had rose to the surface and floated! 'Grab it' Elisha said to him; and he did." I too grabbed the ax head.

God has given me a new lung and now a new heart (not a physical heart, but a spiritual heart), He is restoring my vision of Chaplains in Service- chaplains ministering to people in their community as the Lord leads. I am humbled to be a part of this ministry. If you have any prayer needs, concerns, or just want to talk, please e-mail me at office@helpandcaringministries.org or call me at 701-298-7864. I would be blessed to hear from you. Also if you have sent in for a renewal and have not received it, please let us know.

  We recommend the book:

Just a Walk Across the Room by: Bill Hybels

What if you knew that by simply crossing the room and saying hello to someone, you could change that person forever? Just a few steps to make an eternal difference. It has nothing to do with methods and everything to do with taking a genuine interest in another human being. All you need is a heart that's in tune with the Holy Spirit and willingness to venture out of your "Circle of Comfort" and into another person's life.

Just Walk Across the Room brings personal evangelism into the twenty-first century. Building on the solid foundation laid in Becoming a Contagious Christian, Bill Hybels shows how you can participate in the model first set by Jesus, who stepped down from heaven 2,000 years ago to bring hope and redemption to broken people living in a fallen world. Now it's your turn. Your journey may not be as dramatic, but it can have a life-changing impact for someone standing a few steps away from you- and for you as well, as you learn the power of extending care, compassion, and inclusiveness under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

The highest value in personal evangelism is cooperating with the Spirit, says Hybels. This means playing only the role you're meant to play- walking when the Spirit says to walk, talking when He says to talk, and falling silent when He suggests that you've said enough. Hybels encourages you to "live in 3D,"..... developing friendships, discovering stories, and discerning the appropriate next steps as a means of learning to understand the Holy Spirit's prompting. With fresh perspectives from his own reflections and experiences collected during his most recent decade of ministry, Bill Hybels shows with convincing and inspiring clarity the power of this personal, richly relational approach to evangelism.

The stakes are high. The implications are eternal. You may be only a conversation away from having an eternal impact on someone's life- if you will just walk across the room.
